Christopher Tonk

Digital Solution Advisor, Stora Enso Oyj

As an industry and digitalization professional with international experience, I bring seven years of expertise in the pulp and paper industry. Working within a corporate group, I’ve honed my skills by leading digitization and optimization projects across global production environments. These successful company-wide rollouts, utilizing both waterfall and agile management methodologies, have significantly enhanced operational efficiency (OEE) and positively impacted the organization’s way of working demonstrating my capabilities in digital transformation.
My background extends to full product development, from conceptualizing minimum viable products (MVPs) and first business case calculations to the entire lifecycle, including user training and continuous improvement. Currently, I manage a portfolio of digitalization solutions aimed at optimizing production efficiency and enhancing occupational safety.
As an advisor to production sites across the organization, I guide them in the practical implementation of digitalization strategies, particularly in AI. My analytical mindset and economic acumen, cultivated through studies, work experience, and ongoing training, empower me to drive impactful outcomes. I am skillful at fostering positive change within an organization, leveraging my expertise to drive growth and innovation.
I became IT Business Unit responsible for M&A and divestments in 2024.

How are AI agents reshaping the role of humans in mechanical engineering—and how close are we to fully deploying autonomous co-pilots in industrial environments?

Panel Discussion

Monday, September 29

06:30 pm - 07:15 pm

Live in Berlin

Less Details

With the rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs) and intelligent automation technologies, AI agents are becoming powerful tools in the mechanical engineering sector. These agents can make autonomous decisions, analyze complex data, and interact with machines and systems in real time—transforming traditional processes across maintenance, production, sales, and service. This panel discussion explores how AI agents are being integrated into Industry 4.0, what their current capabilities are, and what ethical, technical, and operational challenges still stand in the way of widespread adoption. Are we at the dawn of a new era where humans and AI co-pilot the factory of the future?

  • What distinguishes AI agents from traditional automation systems and conventional AI applications like chatbots?
  • Which use cases in mechanical engineering are showing the greatest value from deploying AI agents today?
  • How can AI agents be safely integrated into critical manufacturing processes without compromising reliability and control?
  • What are the main challenges in training and governing industrial AI agents—especially in terms of data quality and compliance (e.g., GDPR)?
  • How will the role of engineers and operators evolve as AI agents take on more autonomous tasks? Will they replace, augment, or collaborate with human expertise?

From Data to Impact - Enabling Sustainable Growth in Pulp and Paper Industry

Case Study

Tuesday, September 30

09:45 am - 10:10 am

Live in Berlin

Less Details

The pulp and paper industry is under growing pressure to boost efficiency, cut waste, and meet ambitious sustainability targets. Digital transformation provides a critical opportunity to achieve these goals—when approached holistically. This presentation outlines a human‑centric and end‑to‑end strategy for digitalization, where predictive analytics, advanced process control, and integrated platforms help reduce variability, optimize resources, and improve product quality. Beyond technology, the focus is on empowering people and breaking down silos across the value chain. Real industry use cases will demonstrate measurable gains in energy efficiency, product consistency, and customer satisfaction, showing how digital transformation can position the sector as a leader in sustainable manufacturing.

  • Increasing process demands require advanced digital tools to reduce variability, optimize energy, and improve first-pass quality.
  • Predictive analytics and machine learning provide real-time insights for proactive decision-making.
  • Human-centric design ensures operators and engineers trust and adopt digital systems effectively.
  • End-to-end integration across production, supply chain, and sustainability data avoids siloed “point solutions.”
  • Case studies demonstrate measurable results: reduced downtime, improved yield, and lower environmental footprint.
